A Researcher - Exchange Programme Made me a Better Doctor at Home and Abroad

This article highlights the transformative impact of global health collaborations, focusing on Caleb Skipper’s experiences in Uganda. Initially exposed to African science during his undergraduate studies, Skipper later pursued infectious diseases research in Uganda, facilitated by partnerships between the University of Minnesota and the Infectious Diseases Institute. Through this exchange program, he developed assays to detect viruses and gained insights into patient care and clinical research in resource-limited settings. Notably, his team’s involvement in the Ambition trial led to significant findings in treating cryptococcal meningitis, resulting in updated WHO guidelines. Skipper’s journey underscores the value of cross-cultural learning and collaboration in advancing medical research and improving healthcare outcomes globally.
