How mCODE is Driving EHR Interoperability for Cancer Research
The mCODE initiative, led by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), aims to improve EHR interoperability for cancer research by establishing a standard set of structured data elements. It addresses the challenge of siloed data in healthcare by facilitating the exchange of research-quality cancer data across systems. With over 70 implementations, including major EHR vendors like Epic, mCODE leverages existing standards like HL7 FHIR to promote adoption. By providing a standard language above EHR platforms, mCODE supports electronic consent forms, case report forms, and data exchange in radiation oncology, ultimately advancing cancer care and clinical research.
