Health Information Exchanges (HIE) can be defined as the capability to electronically move clinical data of patients among different healthcare information systems without changing the meaning of the information being exchanged. HIE can occur between various sources like non-owned hospitals, health systems, ambulatory entities, and/or other third parties.
