Innovation Lifecycle Management: Barriers to Adoption
Often, hospitals and health systems have to deal with difficulties and experience major delays in adopting, implementing, and sustaining innovations. Some of the barriers that affect innovation adoption and diffusion are lack of evidence, policies and rules, myths, biases, people-based resources, intra-organizational and extra-organizational factors. Quantitative evidence that ties innovation initiatives to health outcomes is imperative to demonstrate long-term value of innovation, and consequently results in delays in adoption and diffusion of innovations in healthcare settings. Inter-organisational and intra-organisational partnerships are important for establishing and diffusing innovation. In most cases, partnerships are integral parts of the innovation itself. A lack of them can result in failure of the initiatives.
