Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS): Hospitals

A hospital is an institution whose primary role is to provide inpatient healthcare services by the providers. The State Survey Agency is responsible for evaluating the participating hospitals’ compliance with the Medicare requirements. After evaluation, each hospital is certified as a single provider institution. Certification of critical access hospitals is done under different standards. Psychiatric hospitals need to abide by additional regulations other than basic hospital criteria for participation.
