Why COPD is a Perfect Target for RPM

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common and debilitating respiratory diseases patients face. COPD, which impacts nearly 16 million Americans and is the third leading cause of death worldwide, can be challenging to manage if not treated early and effectively. These patients have obstructive airways, which means they struggle to exhale productively. This leads to baseline shortness of breath, as well as periods of acute worsening, termed exacerbations. Exacerbations reduce quality of life and further accelerate the decline in lung function. Treatment of exacerbations with oral medications is often effective, especially when started promptly. While patients with exacerbations of COPD present with worsening shortness of breath, cough, and congestion, the symptoms may not be immediately recognized by the patient, leading to delays in treatment. Doctors spend time educating patients on their symptoms and when to seek care. Despite this, the challenge of treating exacerbations early enough to minimize adverse outcomes, such as hospitalizations, remains.
