Hospital-at-Home: How 3 Healthcare Companies Are Investing In This Growing Space
Mass General Brigham has unveiled ambitious plans to shift 10% of its inpatient care to hospital-at-home services within the next five years. Presently, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital provide a combined 30 daily beds for such services, but the health system envisions expanding this capacity to 200 beds daily in the coming years. This strategic move is a response to the increasing healthcare demands of an aging population and aims to achieve significant cost savings. Research, including a 2018 study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, underscores the financial benefits of home-based patient care, which can be 38% less expensive than traditional inpatient care. Additionally, a 2021 study highlighted significantly lower readmission rates among hospital-at-home patients compared to those treated within a hospital setting. Mass General Brigham intends to lead the way for other healthcare providers and systems by establishing a comprehensive hospital-at-home program.
