Using VR to Create an Immersive Mental Health Support System
Cedars-Sinai’s VR app, Xaia, driven by generative AI and spatial computing, enhances mental health therapy. Developed by clinicians and AI experts, it offers conversational therapy in immersive environments. Xaia utilizes speech-to-text analysis, AI-generated responses, and appropriateness classifiers to augment therapy. With 200 experiences, it’s a supplement to traditional therapy. In a study, users found Xaia helpful and non-judgmental. It’s trained to handle high-risk scenarios and manages bias. Xaia is a product of VRx Health, spun out of Cedars-Sinai, with future integration into health systems. The app represents a new frontier in mental health treatment, combining visuals, audio, and reality to redefine therapy. Cedars-Sinai aims to expand its application, potentially incorporating clinical notes and supporting psychology consultations.
